Starting Early
Why do people say it is better to start saving early?
Because growth builds on growth. Money that has been growing for a long time is growing from a bigger pile, so each year adds more than the last. Someone who starts earlier and puts in less can end up ahead of someone who starts later and puts in more. Time is the part you cannot buy back, and it is the part a young person has the most of.
Two people. Same plan. One starts earlier.
The early one puts in less money. Total.
But their pile has been growing longer.
And growth builds on growth already there.

Draw two lines. Do not explain them.
Draw two curves on paper, one starting further left than the other. That's the entire lesson, and it lands in about four seconds. Every word you add after the picture makes it worse. If you look closer at one thing, look at how the early line stays lower for a long time before it wins — that's the part people actually get wrong.
Use units, not real dollars.
Keep your drawing to “one unit a year” instead of real money. The moment you switch to dollars, you'll start computing what you'd have at forty, and you're back in forecast territory with a made-up growth number doing all the work. Units keep this a shape, not a prediction — and the shape is the actual truth here.
Name the catch, honestly.
The early starter is behind for a long stretch. Say that to yourself. “For years it won't look like it's working.” That's the honest part, and it's what protects you later — because the most common failure isn't starting late. It's starting early and quitting in year three because nothing visible happened yet.
Do not let this feel like pressure.
There's a version of this lesson that sounds like “you're already behind,” which is false and a bad thing to believe about yourself. You have more of the scarce ingredient than almost anyone. Say the true version instead: you have the thing adults wish they still had, and you didn't have to earn it — it just came with your age.
