Saving Is Not Growing
What is the difference between saving money and growing money?
Saving means keeping money where it is safe and stays the same. Growing means putting it somewhere it can get bigger — and anywhere it can get bigger, it can also get smaller. Those are two different jobs. Money you need soon should be saved. Money you will not touch for a long time is the only money that can afford to grow.
Saving and growing are not the same job.
Saved money stays the same. That's the point of it.
Growing money can get bigger — or smaller.
Money you need soon? Keep it safe.
Money you won't touch for years? That one can grow.
Go deeper — try this yourself
Ask when, not how risky.
“Risk” is a fuzzy word. “When do I need this?” is not. Think of two things you want — one next month, one in five years. They're obviously different, and once you notice that, the right place to keep the money for each one falls out on its own. You just used the idea of a time horizon without needing the word.
Say the down part out loud.
Anywhere money can grow, it can also shrink. Say that to yourself plainly, once, without softening it. You already know a game can be lost — this isn't different. What's actually hard is finding out later that nobody told you. This one sentence is the most important honest thing in the whole course.
Do not chase a product name yet.
You might want to know the exact name of the place growing happens — an account, an app, a specific investment. Skip that for now. The point of this lesson is the difference between two jobs: safe and growing. A name attached too early turns an idea into a decision you're not ready to make. “I'll get to that” is a complete answer right now.
Sort your own money, out loud.
If you have any money right now, split it out loud: what's for soon, what's for later. If you don't, use a piece of paper — list what you'd want soon and what you'd want later instead. There's no right ratio. The sorting itself is the lesson. Putting almost everything in “soon” is exactly right when your horizon is a school term.
You've got it if you ask yourself “when do I need this?” before “where should I put it?” That question, asked in that order, is most of personal finance.
