What to Skip
Every broker monetizes somewhere, and E*TRADE's somewheres come with an institutional-grade upsell: margin, a genuinely powerful active-trading platform, options and futures access, and an alerts system tuned for engagement. None of these are scams — each has a legitimate user. This lesson is the honest walkthrough of which ones that user is, and why it's mostly not you.
Margin lets you invest borrowed dollars — amplifying gains, losses, and, in sharp drawdowns, forcing sales at the bottom via margin calls: the exact moment your Process training says never to sell. Interest accrues regardless. The Foundations debt lesson already ruled here: investing borrowed money is how survivable declines become unsurvivable ones. For a plan-driven investor, the answer is simply no — a standard cash account executes every strategy this school teaches.
Power E*TRADE is not a gimmick — it's a legitimately capable platform for active traders: streaming data, a deep options chain, a den of technical studies. The honest math: a plan-driven investor executing a handful of trades a year, with limit orders, extracts almost none of that platform's value. Its pull is gravitational precisely because it's good — treat 'I have access to this' as a fact about the app, not a reason to use it.
The app offers options trading readily, and E*TRADE has long marketed itself to options traders specifically, plus futures for eligible accounts. You know our position: options are real tools — AFTER the 24 lessons of the Options School, used as pre-commitment devices, sized like tuition. Futures sit outside this school's curriculum entirely; treat that as the recommendation it is. The durable rule: access granted by an app is not readiness; readiness comes from education the app has no incentive to require.
Default alerts celebrate movement — price triggers, market news pushes, 'top movers,' nudges toward Power E*TRADE's live dashboards — each one an invitation to open the app and act. You learned the counter in the doing-nothing lesson: starve the interruption machine. Go to settings and disable everything except what structure needs (order fills, dividends, transfers, security alerts). The app should speak when your MONEY moves, never merely when prices do.
E*TRADE will keep shipping features, especially on the trader side of the house; here's the durable test for each: does this help me execute my written plan, or does it invite me to act outside it? Executes the plan → consider it. Invites action → skip it, whatever the marketing says. That single question, asked at every prompt, is this whole lesson compressed into a reflex.
Margin: no. Power E*TRADE: a specialist's tool, not yours by default. Options and futures: education and the experiment book first, or not at all. Alerts: pruned to what money-movement requires. The filter forever: does it execute the plan, or invite exits from it?
