Running Your Plan Through the App
Graduation lesson: assembling the previous seven into one repeatable operating rhythm. A written plan on paper, an app configured for execution, and three cadences — monthly, quarterly, annual — that together make E*TRADE a power tool for the discipline you built across this school, without ever letting Power E*TRADE take the wheel.
By now the machine is assembled: bank linked, fixed monthly deposit scheduled, recurring investments implementing your core allocation, DRIP on, alerts pruned, cash account not margin, order-type rules written into your plan. Run down that list once and check every box — this half-hour of configuration IS most of the course, made permanent.
Once a month — scheduled, not whenever the app beckons — confirm the plumbing: deposit landed, recurring buys executed, dividends reinvested. You are auditing the MACHINE, not judging the market; portfolio performance is explicitly not this visit's business. Five minutes, close the app. Most months, that's the entire relationship.
Each quarter, pull your current position weights and set them beside your written targets — the rebalance rules from the Portfolio course decide if anything crosses your materiality band. Most quarters: nothing does, and doing nothing is the correct, practiced skill. When a trigger fires, execute per your order-type rules and journal the why. If you track your book in our planner, enter your holdings — or connect your account where that's supported — and the drift math is done for you; paper and a calculator do the same job.
Once a year, the full ceremony from Foundations: re-read the plan, grade the year against your benchmark in the mirror, raise the recurring amount as income grew, re-underwrite anything held for loyalty rather than merit, and amend rules — in writing, in calm, effective next quarter. This is the only meeting where the plan itself is on the table. The app is just where the resulting orders get typed.
You now operate E*TRADE the way this school operates everything: decisions on paper, execution by structure, activity on a calendar instead of a mood — with a genuinely powerful trading platform sitting one tab away, permanently declined by default. The app's job is to be boring and reliable; yours is to let it. Take that standard with you to any broker for the rest of your life.
Setup once, glance monthly, drift-check quarterly, review annually — with every decision on paper and every order just execution. That rhythm is the whole course, and it works in any app you'll ever hold money in.
