Funding Your Account
Money in, money out, and the two concepts that confuse every new investor: available balance versus settled cash, and how long a transfer really takes. Five minutes here saves you the classic beginner surprises — 'why can't I withdraw yet?' and 'why did my transfer take a few days?'
In the account area you connect a bank account — through instant verification or small test deposits that take a day or two, and Schwab's banking integration can make this especially seamless if you also hold a Schwab checking account. Do this once, from your primary bank, and resist adding every account you own: one funding artery keeps your records clean and your transfers traceable.
A standard bank transfer (ACH) genuinely takes a few business days to move, and some of it may show as available before the underlying transfer fully completes — a convenience, not magic. The durable rule: money isn't truly yours to withdraw until the underlying transfer settles, and reversed transfers (a typo'd amount, an overdrawn bank account) create genuine messes. Fund deliberately.
When you sell a security, US markets settle the trade the next business day — the cash is usable for reinvesting right away, but withdrawing it to your bank waits for settlement plus the transfer itself. This is market plumbing, common to every broker, not Schwab holding your money hostage. Plan withdrawals a week ahead and settlement will never annoy you.
Schwab offers taxable brokerage accounts, retirement accounts (traditional and Roth IRAs), and — because it's full-service — banking products and managed advisory accounts alongside them. You learned the account-type ladder in Foundations: tax-advantaged retirement space generally earns its place before taxable investing, and a managed advisory option is a trade-off to evaluate deliberately, not a default to drift into. Choose which account this money belongs in BEFORE it arrives, per your written plan — the label decides decades of tax treatment.
Set a fixed monthly deposit, sized from your budget in calm, and let it run — this is the automatic-investing law from Foundations wearing Schwab's clothes. A modest deposit that never skips beats a heroic deposit that depends on your mood. Lesson six wires this to automatic purchases; for now, just get the money arriving on schedule.
One bank artery, deliberate deposits, patience with settlement, and a fixed monthly transfer that never asks how you feel. Funding is plumbing — make it boring and it makes you rich slowly, which is the point.
