Robinhood Step by Step
LESSON 02 / 08The Cockpit

Funding Your Account

Money in, money out, and the two concepts that confuse every new investor: instant deposits and settlement. Five minutes here saves you the classic beginner surprises — 'why can't I withdraw yet?' and 'why did my transfer take four days?'

Linking a bank, once.

In the account area you connect a bank account — typically through an instant verification service, sometimes via small test deposits that take a day or two. Do this once, from your primary checking account, and resist adding every account you own: one funding artery keeps your records clean and your transfers traceable.

Deposits and the "instant" asterisk.

A standard bank transfer (ACH) genuinely takes a few business days to move. Robinhood typically fronts you some of it as instant buying power while the real transfer completes in the background — a convenience, not magic. The durable rule: the money isn't truly there until the underlying transfer settles, and reversed transfers (a typo'd amount, an overdrawn bank account) create genuine messes. Fund deliberately.

Settlement: why your cash has a waiting period.

When you sell a stock, US markets settle the trade the next business day — the cash is credited to you immediately for reinvesting, but withdrawing it to your bank waits for settlement plus the transfer itself. This is market plumbing, not the app holding your money hostage. Plan withdrawals a week ahead and settlement will never annoy you.

Account types deserve one deliberate choice.

Robinhood offers taxable brokerage accounts and retirement accounts (IRAs — traditional and Roth), sometimes with match promotions on retirement contributions. You learned the account-type ladder in Foundations: tax-advantaged retirement space generally earns its place before taxable investing. Choose which account this money belongs in BEFORE it arrives, per your written plan — the label decides decades of tax treatment.

The funding habit that beats every feature.

Set a fixed monthly deposit, sized from your budget in calm, and let it run — this is the automatic-investing law from Foundations wearing Robinhood's clothes. A modest deposit that never skips beats a heroic deposit that depends on your mood. Lesson six wires this to automatic purchases; for now, just get the money arriving on schedule.

One bank artery, deliberate deposits, patience with settlement, and a fixed monthly transfer that never asks how you feel. Funding is plumbing — make it boring and it makes you rich slowly, which is the point.
