The Lay of the Land
E*TRADE has been an online brokerage since before most apps you use today existed, and it now sits inside Morgan Stanley — which buys it real institutional plumbing, not marketing. That pedigree cuts both ways: it also means a genuinely capable active-trading platform, Power E*TRADE, is one tap away from your everyday account. This lesson maps the calm side of the house in durable terms that survive every redesign.
A US brokerage — SIPC-member, regulator-overseen, commission-free for stocks and ETFs like essentially every major broker now — operating as part of Morgan Stanley. Your securities are held in your account, custodied the ordinary way. Revenue comes from the usual mix: payment for order flow, margin interest, and the active-trading tools it sells you on. Know the business model and the upsell prompts stop being mysterious.
E*TRADE's standard experience is calm and account-first; Power E*TRADE, reachable from the same login, is a trader's cockpit — streaming quotes, options chains, a den of technical tools. Neither is a trick. The standard app is where a plan-driven investor should live nearly all the time; Power E*TRADE is a specialist tool this course teaches you to recognize and mostly decline, in lesson seven.
Durable anatomy, whatever the labels look like this year: a SEARCH function to find any stock or ETF by name or ticker; a DETAIL page per security (price, chart, news, an order button); your PORTFOLIO of current holdings; an ACCOUNT/settings area holding transfers, statements, tax documents, and recurring investments; and an ALERTS system you will soon prune hard. Five concepts. Everything else is either decoration or Power E*TRADE bleeding through.
A security's page leads with a chart, defaulted to a short window — the least useful setting on it. The durable value sits below: fundamentals, news, and the order entry point. One tap stretches the chart to five years, where the picture you learned to read in Reading the Market actually lives. Make long-window charts a reflex before forming any impression.
Before any money moves, decide how you'll use this tool: the app is for EXECUTING decisions made elsewhere — on paper, in calm, per your plan — never for making them. E*TRADE's institutional weight makes it easy to assume the interface knows what's best for you; it doesn't, and it isn't trying to. That's the whole philosophy of this course, and lesson eight makes it a complete workflow.
E*TRADE is a real, well-capitalized brokerage with a trader's cockpit bolted on. Learn the five durable screens, know the second app exists, and decide today that this app executes your plan — it never gets to BE the plan.
